Get your yard in shape this summer

Jul 27, 2017, 08:55 AM

If you haven’t noticed … it’s hot outside! Along with the heat — summer brings its own set of challenges when it comes to gardening and maintaining your yard. The Mississippi Ag and Arkansas Ag team has put together a list of tips to help you get through those long, hot days of late summer.

The summer heat can do a number on your crops, especially if it is dry outside. Shade is crucial for heat-sensitive crops and shade netting can help these crops thrive when it comes to the hot summer sun. Shade netting decrease the soil and air temperatures around the plants to up to 10 degrees cooler. Shade netting is available at most hardware stores and is easy to install!

During a dry summer, property owners feel the need to water their yards constantly. Everyone wants a lush, green lawn, but too much or too little water can cause more damage than good when you’re striving for the lawn of the month. The time of day plays a big part in how to get the most out of your water. The morning is the best time to water your lawn, because cool air is more abundant and the wind is usually calmer. This time also gives your lawn all day to absorb the water, rather than holding it overnight, which can cause lawn disease.

Make the most of your clippings. When you have to mow your lawn, take advantage of those sometimes annoying clippings. Lawn clippings can make great mulch for young plants! It’s good to check for weeds and seeds prior to putting these clippings into your flowerbed or by young plants. This will help you avoid pulling weeds in the future.
