Accel Deep 48A MowerAccel Deep 48A Mower

The 48-in. (122-cm) Accel Deep Mower Deck is a stamped-steel, deep, flat-top design that delivers excellent cut quality, productivity, cleanliness, durability, and versatility. Optimal performance and dispersion of clippings is provided, even at faster mowing speeds:

  • 4.5-in. (11.4-cm) deep throughout the entire deck shell for optimum mowing, mulching, and bagging performance
    • Optional MulchControl™ attachment provides superior mulching performance and versatility.
  • Stamped-steel design eliminates sharp edges and corners where material can build up and diminish mowing performance
  • Mower deck is suspended from the vehicle for a smooth and level cut
    • Adjustable mower wheels, positioned just above ground level, help smooth out the mowing job
Excellent cut quality

Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:

  • Reducing the amount of re-cutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
    • Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
  • Clean flow of material out of discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
  • Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal re-cutting, and an even distribution of clippings.
Productivity - getting the job done fast
Right side of Accel Deep 48A Mower DeckRight side of Accel Deep 48A Mower Deck

Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of recutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:

  • Greatly improves mowers capacity to maintain excellent mowing performance in difficult mowing conditions and at higher speeds

Large discharge opening is both high and wide to handle more material:

  • Gives a smooth, even discharge of clippings at all mowing speeds
  • Reduces the chance of plugging, especially important when operating in wet, thick, or dense grass and when bagging
  • The 48A Power Flow™ blower has an inlet housing with over 50 percent greater area than the 48X Power Flow blower used on previous machines.
Cleanliness - for the mower and the operator

Accel Deep 48A Mower DeckAccel Deep 48A Mower Deck

The flat-top shape of the deck stamping is optimal for keeping itself and the operator clean:

  • There are few places to catch and hold material on top and underneath the deck.
    • Top of deck stays cleaner, reducing time and effort needed for cleaning and service
    • Underside of deck is self-cleaning to maintain optimum performance without buildup of material to interfere with the flow of air and clippings
    • Less need to clean and remove buildup of material from underside deck
  • The depth of the Accel Deep Mower Deck minimizes the amount of material that escapes from the front of the deck
    • Limited amount of material to drift onto the operator and mower deck
    • Even for material discharged out the chute, less recutting results in larger pieces that are less likely to end up on the operator
    • Mulching prevents the discharge of material completely and the MulchControl attachment makes mulching a practical solution for most mowing situations.
Versatility - easy to change between side discharge, mulch, and bagging modes

The 48A Mower is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another:

  • With the optional MulchControl attachment installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side-discharge to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever.
  • The Power Flow rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl attachment and blades installed - by simply placing the MulchControl lever in the side-discharge position.

Cleaning a mower deck, both top and bottom, is one of the most frequent maintenance activities:

  • The flat-top design reduces places for material to build up and makes material that does collect easy to remove.

Superior durability is designed in
Spindle pocketSpindle pocket
Mower wheels are double capturedMower wheels are double captured

The 48A Mower Deck has strong spindle pockets, to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough service:

  • Ribs in the deck shell add strength where it is needed.
  • The 48A has a 23 percent heavier overall weight than the Edge™ Xtra 48-in. (122-cm) Mower Deck used on previous machines.

Mower wheels are double-captured:

  • Provides greater strength and durability for longer, trouble-free life.
  • Single-bolt adjustment makes setting wheels to the correct height for the cutting height quick and easy.

Low-tension belt-drive design reduces the side load on engine lower bearings and mower deck bearings for longer life.

The 48A Mower Deck features a 5/8-in. (16-mm) diameter solid-steel rod side bumper that provides extra strength and protection.

Dual-stage E-coat and powder-paint coatings provide extra protection from rust.

MulchControl option

The MulchControl attachment for the 48A Mower Deck makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer use
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings

MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:

  • The MulchControl attachment includes baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
    • The MulchControl baffle, or divider, between the left and middle spindles is about half way down. The height is designed to balance the mulching and side-discharge modes.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is open, the divider between the left and middle spindles passes a portion of the material to the discharge opening, along with the material from the middle and right spindle areas.
    • When the MulchControl baffle is closed, the material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.
MulchControl baffle closedMulchControl baffle closed
MulchControl handleMulchControl handle
  • The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
    • The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • Changing from mulching to side discharge or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:

  • Usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
  • Usually side-discharge, but would like to be able to close the chute to control clippings
  • Always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
  • Bag clippings, but want to go farther before emptying bags

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. Now the operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharge or bagging when needed.

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one-third of the material. Therefore, the side-discharge mode is essentially a partial-mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:

  • When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
  • When cutting in wet, high-growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
  • When optimum bagging and lawn clean-up is desired

Mcs Chutes

Power Flow chute and blowerPower Flow chute and blower
Hopper, chute, and blowerHopper, chute, and blower

The Power Flow chute is required, along with the high-performance Power Flow blower, to use the 2-bag Power Flow material collection system. The chute includes a convenient handle and a fill indicator that tells the operator when the bags are getting full.

One chute works with several vehicle applications. Trim lines on the chute are referenced in the instructions so the chute can be cut to the proper length for the vehicle/mower application.

6.5-bu (229-L) rear bagger, chute, and blower6.5-bu (229-L) rear bagger, chute, and blower

The 6.5-bu (229-L) rear bagger efficiently collects material from the mower deck:

  • A Power Flow™ blower (ordered separately) on the end of the mower deck moves material up the chute (ordered separately) and into the hopper.
  • A weight bracket and four 18-lb (8.2-kg) weights are included for installation on the front of the vehicle to help counterbalance the weight of the hopper.

Removing bag from 6.5-bu (229-L) hopperRemoving bag from 6.5-bu (229-L) hopper

The hopper design provides efficient bagging performance, clean operation, and easy-to-empty bags:

  • Two durable bags give a generous, 6.5-bu (229-L) capacity.
  • The bags lift out for easy emptying.
  • Efficient chute provides a smooth flow of material to reduce the chance of plugging.
    • The chute and Power Flow blower must be ordered separately.
  • Standard mower blades are used for bagging.
  • Air exhaust duct directs air from the hopper back and toward the ground for clean operation.
  • Convenient latch makes opening and closing the hopper easy.

NOTE: Appropriate Power Flow blower, chute, and attachment bar are required (ordered separately).

NOTE: The 6.5-bu (229-L) hopper is not compatible with 60-in. (152-cm) and 62-in. (157-cm) Mower Decks because their larger size and ability to fill the hopper more quickly reduces the usefulness of the bagging system.

X730 Tractor with 48A Mower DeckX730 Tractor with 48A Mower Deck

The MulchControl attachment for the 48A Mower Deck makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:

  • A beautiful looking lawn
  • Grass clippings not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
  • Less fertilizer use
  • Elimination of the effort needed to dispose of clippings

MulchControl baffle closed (similar mower from X700 Series Tractor shown)MulchControl baffle closed (similar mower from X700 Series Tractor shown)

    • When the MulchControl baffle is closed, this material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.
MulchControl limitations

While in the side-discharge mode, MulchControl will still mulch about one third of the material.

MulchControl baffle closedMulchControl baffle closed
MulchControl handleMulchControl handle
  • The MulchControl handle is located on top of the mower deck and used to open and close the discharge baffle.
    • The operator is required to get off of the machine in order to engage or disengage mulch mode.
  • Changing from mulching to side discharging or vice versa takes only a few seconds.

    • With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower will run without material when the baffle is closed.

MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings. The operator can have all the benefits of mulching with the ability to easily change to side discharge or bagging when needed.

Great value

I Have had a Z525 with a 54 inch deck for 3 seasons and have been very satisfied with it's performance. I can get my 3 acres mowed quickly and it does a very good job of mowing evenly.

FIRST TIME, SHAME ON YOUā€¦SECOND TIME, SHAME ON ME!

2/5

First of all, the features I love on this zero turn are the five gallon gas tank (no gauge though), the 8.5 mph speed, and the hour meter. John Deere has the worst warranty in the consumer industry...120 hours or two years, whichever comes first!!! My biggest complaint has been the quality of the cut. I've bought the necessary gauges and adjusted and re-adjusted to get the best cut. I still get uneven cutting. We have five acres of various weeds and grass, but my Toro always gave excellent results with an even, level cut. The John Deere has more of a bush hog blade, maybe twice as thick as the Toro, and it's great when cutting wild brush in the pasture behind our acreage. But don't expect a nice, even cut on a lawn. Our John dealer has been nice and courteous, but after one year of operation, the starter and solenoid needed to be changed. They did the repairs under warranty, only to call us about one month after the repairs were done to let us know that John Deere was not honoring the claim. The dealership thought the warranty was 150 hours and 2 years, whichever came first. John Deere says 120 hours. Now the dealership expects us to pay the $500 repair bill...we've only owned the equipment one year! In addition, I had them do an oil change at the same time...it cost over $100! I think I'm going to sell my Deere (if I can) and go back to my Toro S5000 zero turn. I should have never betrayed my dependable red zero turn that gave me a beautiful cut every time! I don't trust this green monster! Note: When I purchased this John Deere from Home Depot, the manager from the lawn department sold me on John Deere's outstanding warranty of three years, no questions asked return policy. He gave me an owners manual and key that went to a John Deere lawn tractor. I had to return to the store to get the correct key and manual...they only had the key. The department manager had no idea what he was selling. He was just into "branding"..."nothing runs like a Deere". Yeah, nothing!

2 years no problem, year 3, engine keeps stalling

2/5

Really liked this mower for 2 years. It has about 72 hours on it. Had it serviced over the winter and second time out this spring and it now keeps stalling every few minutes when the blades are engaged. So now can't mow the lawn. 2 year warranty and at the beginning of year 3, problems.

Its a lawn mowing sports car

5/5

Only have 10 hours on it so far. This is the most awesome machine I have ever owned. Its like mowing you lawn with a high performance ATV. In fact, now that I have this, I am selling my RZR Turbo. Donā€™t need it anymore. I have 5 acres to mow. With the super high top speed, and the way it corners like its on rails, I get it done in no time! And, its fun cause it hauls butt. I feel like I am racing motocross! Except its lawnocross. And, yes full reverse, slam it forward, and you have an impressive wheelie going on. Whats even more cool, is when you start it cold, it idles like a Harley for about a minute. The chicks dig me on this thing with my huge 54ā€ deck. I actually stare at the grass waiting for it to grow so I can go racing around the yard. One thing, buy it from a dealer, you get the same or better price, more thoroughly set up, options installed for free, much better service than Lowes. Just saying.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

1/5

Perhaps I am just the unlucky person that got a lemon, but...purchased this mower from Home Depot while my home was still under construction, consequently it wasn't used much during the first two years of ownership. Ten days past the two year warranty the hydro static transmission on one side quit working, with only 37 hours on the machine. After being told by John Deere Customer Service that there was nothing John Deere could/would do since it was ten days out of warranty, my husband purchased parts to the tune of $400 and made the repair. We happily started mowing for about 30 minutes...guess what? The other side went out!!! Now this machine has 37 hours on it and needs another $400.00 dollars in parts to make it go. We have a John Deere tractor that we love, so I was thrilled to purchase this machine. Now I am just so frustrated with this machine and with John Deere as a whole!!!

Great machine, if it is assembled properly

4/5

Purchased this mower special order from Lowes. It arrived (late) with 3!! scheduled deliveries that did not happen. It was supposed to be ready to mow. It would not run, just kept stalling as the carb and idle were not adjusted properly. Once adjusted, I started mowing. The FWD/REV arms were way off so those also needed adjusted to go straight. With everything set up, I was off... and man, this mower is fast!! Then everything started falling off. Every bolt, nut, fastener was loose. Spent some time tightening everything and then I was back in business. Until the deck fell off. The U bracket fell off and went thru the blades. I must have missed the fact that apparently those nuts were also loose. Contacted Lowes about 10 times and they won't do anything about the mangled U bracket or damaged blades. Sent an email to John Deere, no response. So, I am giving this mower a good rating with some caveats. Buy from a reputable dealer who will set this mower up properly, or set it up yourself if you want to be sure. Everything about the actual machine is awesome if it is assembled and maintained correctly. So far, I am giving the warranty a negative. I have spent a lot of time trying to get the damaged repaired on a 3k dollar machine with only a few hours on it with no luck.

Z525E Love it!

5/5

I've been wanting a zero turn for 3 or 4 years. If you have several trees or a not so smooth yard get the Z525. The bigger tires and heavier frame can handle the terrain. It used to take 3 to 4 hours to cut about 3/4 of an acre, now it is about 1 to 2 hours. If you have a lot of trees like I do, get the mulch kit. A bit of a task to install, but it turns leaves into confetti in no time. Highly recommend.

Nothing Beats a Deere!

5/5

I opted for the 54" deck as I have the room for it and am not disappointed. I have had zero problems with it and mow more ground in less time. What used to take 4+ hours is down to just over 2 and with 50 new trees it would take even longer with my old mower. The Z525E zips around with ease. If I ever decide to upgrade it will definitely be another John Deere.

Pros

  • ease of use
  • comfort
  • preinstalled cleaning port
  • size of fuel tank

Cons

  • none

Really Quick Mower

4/5

I sold my 11 year old X300 and got this 525 with the 48" deck, mostly I was looking to save time mowing about an acre of grass. The 300 was taking just over an hour, with this it's about 40-45 minutes. What I like: With over an 8mph ground speed this thing is quick! The transmissions are great - very smooth. The mower height lever works great - no pedal needed. Other than the rough ride the operator position is good. What I don't: I generally have no issues with Briggs engines but I'm not in love with this M44 briggs engine over the Kawasaki in my 2006 X300, it's loud, idles rough when started, and smells like it's a dirty engine emissions wise. For this much they should charge $100 more and just put a Kawasaki in it. Also I have a 3 year old lawn, this thing is a *rough* rider over anything but the smoothest lawn. I can't imagine riding on it for more than 1.5 hrs. It also cuts grass terribly at full speed which I kind of figured.

Pros

  • fast
  • good price

Cons

  • engine is just ok
  • doesn't have as much traction as i expected
